Event Announcements

Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) hosted an event to mark the launch of a new report entitled “The First Battle of the Next War: Wargaming a Chinese Invasion of Taiwan.” The event featured remarks from the report’s authors: Mark Cancian, senior adviser of the international security program at CSIS; Matthew Cancian, senior researcher at the United States Naval War College; and Eric Heginbotham, principal research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for International Studies. The authors’ presentation was followed by a panel discussion with  retired Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula, dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies; Becca Wasser, senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security Defense Program; and William S. Murray, professor at the U.S. Naval War College.  

Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host a panel discussion to examine the future of the U.S.-China competition for human capital. The panel will be moderated by Jude Blanchette, Freeman Chair in China studies at CSIS and panelists will include Yasheng Huang, faculty director of action learning and professor of international management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management; Amy Nice, immigration law and policy expert; and Matthew Turpin, visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. Ryan Hass, Brookings senior fellow, will provide introductory remarks.

Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University will host a seminar to examine Islamist movements, the left, and authoritarian legacies in Egypt. The event will feature remarks from Hesham Sallam, a research scholar at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. 

Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host an event to discuss the case for Ukraine retaking Crimea. The event will feature remarks from Debra Cagan, distinguished energy fellow at the Transatlantic Leadership Network; retired Gen. Wes Clark, former supreme allied commander Europe; Leonid Gozman, Russian opposition politician and commentator; and Andriy Zagorodnyuk, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center and former minister of defense of Ukraine. John E. Herbst, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, will moderate the discussion. 

Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event featuring Rep. Adam Smith’s (D-Wash.) reflections on U.S. defense policy and considerations on what the future holds for defense policy. Melanie W. Sisson, Brookings fellow; and Michael E. O’Hanlon, Brookings senior fellow, will moderate.

Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. ET: CSIS will host three panel discussions and a roundtable discussion to examine the Indo-Pacific Forecast for 2023. The roundtable discussion will focus on networking in the Indo-Pacific, the first panel will focus on China, the second will cover the Indo-Pacific’s allies and partners, and the third panel will examine economics and trade. 

Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: CSIS will host an event to discuss operating in a hostile media environment in Venezuela and the implications this has for the 2024 elections. The event will feature remarks from Carlos Correa, director of Espacio Público; William Neuman, author and former Andes Region Bureau chief at the New York Times; Ryan C. Berg, director of the Americas Program at CSIS; and Mark Feierstein, nonresident senior adviser of the Americas Program at CSIS.
