A patriotic street sign at the corner of Oriental Boulevard and Corbin Place in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn which mysteriously disappeared for a second time a few weeks ago has now been replaced thanks to the efforts of Be Proud, Inc., community leaders, and the NYC Department of Transportation.

The intersection is co-named “Heroes of Operation Iraqi Freedom Way” and sometime after November 4, 2020, the green street sign, which honored military members who served in Iraqi, went missing.

Raisa Chernina, founder of Be Proud, Inc., a local organization which sponsors many events throughout Brooklyn’s Russian-American community, was instrumental in lobbying to have the first sign dedicated during a ceremony in 2004.  When the sign disappeared for a second time some time after November 4, 2020, Chernina appealed to local elected officials, Community Board 15, and the NYC Department of Transportation.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the quick response from every one involved.  The sign was replaced in a matter of weeks, and for that we are very grateful,” said Chernina.

Be Proud, Inc. has coordinated a small ceremony to celebrate the sign’s return which will take place on Thursday, December 3, 2020, 11:30 AM at the corner of Oriental Boulevard and Corbin Place.
